This week, we studied the importance of digital media in webpages. Whether you are choosing images, video, or audio, it is important to make sure your content is not copyrighted. There are many free resources for finding non copyrighted material, and some material is usable under “Fair use guidelines”. No matter the context, copyright free content will be available, since you can just create it yourself. Once you create something, that content is copyrighted to you, the rightful creator and owner.

With all of that said, there is no excuse to have copyrighted material on your webpages. You want to avoid legal trouble at all costs, it is both expensive and completely avoidable.

  • Color Combinations

There are many ways to choose color combinations for your website. But which way is the best? Looking into color theory, you are bound to come across the color wheel. This wheel was invented in 1666 by Sir Isaac Newton, who mapped the color spectrum onto a disc. Using the RGB specific color wheel, I found many colors that fit alongside my favorite color, purple.

Complementary colors are two colors on opposite sides of the color wheel. Choosing this style will provide a high visual contrast.

Monochromatic colors are 3 shades, tints, or tones chosen around one base color. These colors provide a subtle and conservative look.

Analogous colors are 3 colors next to each other on the wheel. Since these are 3 colors that would be chosen as primary colors, the balance and use of the colors is more important.

Triadic colors are 3 colors evenly spaced out on the wheel. Provides high contrast and more variety than complementary.

Tetradic colors are 4 evenly spaced out colors. These color schemes are less contrast than triadic or complementary but still enough to be considered a “bold” color scheme.

    Other Color Terms

Primary, secondary, and tertiary colors: these are categories of colors that change depending on if you are using RGB colors or RYB colors. In RGB, primary colors are red, green, and blue. When added together, they create white. Secondary colors are the 6 combinations of the primary colors, and tertiary colors combine primary and secondary.

Warm and cool colors: colors have a “color temperature” associated with them. Colors that are warmer, such as red or yellow, have cozier or heat related connotations, such as the sun. Cool colors, mostly greens and blues, have colder connotations, like ice or ocean water.

Shades, tints, and tones: Shades and tints are created by adding either black or white to a base hue, respectively. Tones are created by combining both black and white with a base hue.

Hue, saturation, and luminance: A hue is basically any color included on the color wheel. The saturation and luminance values determine the intensity and brightness of the hue, respectively.

My favorite color is purple. On the wheel, i found #601DC4 to be close to what i prefer.
